Mirko Gustony, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from

Is there anything I can do?

Yes, but I didn't have many other ideas how to track it down except to
leave it to the compiz/X devs.

Hi Dave,
I've managed to capture the output of top on my machine while having
console window open. You will see at some point Xorg and firefox at
crazy CPU load and then Xorg for some times completely vanishes from the
list and firefox drops to zero load.
I hope this helps?

Hi Dave,
sorry, I don't have a second machine available.
I can add another fact: The problem doesn't occur when using Ubuntu in
"Gnome fallback (no effects)" mode.

hmm, a bit tricky to figure out from that.
Can you login from another machine over a network while it does that?
If so then it's worth seeing if the remote shell hangs while the display is

Hi Dave,
I've just tested. Before I started Firefox Xorg.0.log's last line was "[
188.082]". After I experienced the stall the last line was still "[
188.082]". So nothing had been added to it. In today's log file there's
also no trace of those errors you've spotted. So they could be
unrelated.

Hi Mirko,
I noticed in your X log file there is a stream of errors like:
[ 589.510] (EE) RADEON(0): [DRI2] DRI2SwapBuffers: bad drawable
[ 589.542] (EE) RADEON(0): [DRI2] DRI2SwapBuffers: bad drawable
can you figure out if they correspond to your stalls? I think if you
were to look at /var/l
