Why are you still interested in hal? It's been deprecated ages ago, and
any modern software apps (should) use more robust alternatives such as
udev. Also, it's finally being removed from the archive (see LP:
#1221254)

Bugs, which is
Hal scans both /usr/share/hal and /etc/hal. But if the right
directories in /etc/hal don't exist it errors out. Adding the symlink
means that all the config stuff in /usr/share/hal gets scanned twice.
(and now I know way too much about code that been deprecated for 4
years...)
