I found a "fix", but it won't maybe work for all of you.
1. download & install Unity Tweak Tool from Software Center.
2. run it and then go to Window Manager tab, then General and TURN OFF Window

The same behavior happens to me on 14.10.
I had been using a desktop wallpaper client (Wallch). After disabling
Wallch and setting the desktop background to a solid color, the behavior

I had the same problem. In my case the problem was with file manager
that handles desktop. Try to start nemo or nautilus file managers.

the x at the top to close one. It closes another window instead of the

This happens to me as well. Two different computers. Using compiz to
hotkey between workspaces causes the display to hang. Also closing the
last window on a workspace. The fix is to alt-tab to something else and
then activity resumes.
My two computers couldn't be more different. One is a X61

Window freeze happens on minimizing of last window.
Freeze resolved by "Show All Windows - Exposé type thingy" (on my system
top right corner...)
My system:
Lenovo T61p
4 GB Ram
120 GB SSD

3.8.0-19-generic GNU/Linux

To my experience the freeze happens with the last window that is to be
minimized (when there are no further windows on the screen to be
minimized).
