I ran Check disc for defects on the 13.04 Beta 2 amd64 image and it
checked OK, and then used it to install without any problems. I did the
same with a 13.04 Beta 2 i386 image and the iso md5sum was OK, the burn
was OK, the burn verify was OK, but the Check disc for defects resulted
in a hang, and

There is no fair comparison between the live and alternate images. The
alternates and netboot images are based on the debian-installer (d-i)
whereas the live images use casper while live, and ubiquity during
installation.

With raring-alternate-i386, everything was fine. I managed to do the
check for errors. I checked my LiveUSB which is created using the 'dd'
method.
BUT ...
With raring-desktop-i386, the check for errors does not work at all. It
will only show this - please see the attached screenshot.
Seems to run ok on the lubuntu AMD64+mac image from 2013-04-08, both on
dvd and in a vm.
