I am surprised about the missing interest in dealing with this bug. We
have the support end for a major LTS release, Lucid, coming up, and one
would assume that people, who still hang on this release, will upgrade
to the next LTS version, Precise.

No. Beyond what I had written down manually, which is posted above,
nothing exists. As I said, I could not even boot the system into any
state.
The many dependency problems don't give any clues?

I am sorry that you had a bad experience upgrading to 12.04. Do you
happen to have any log files saved from the failed upgrade? They will
be located in '/var/log/dist-upgrade/'. Thanks in advance.
