I haven't have time to try out your suggestions, but now the problem seems to
be solved without intervention. I'm now running kernel 3.5.0-26 (same as the
time of reporting issue) and Network manager is displaying wireless singnal
lists.
I'm not quite sure if I did an update after reporting iss

Yes. If I boot with kernel 3.5.0-17 i have no problem with wireless adapter.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
