Thanks Micah, I think you've just been quite a help. Obviously I'd
already checked the Adaptec web site and there were no specific drivers
for Linux listed against this card, but a deeper check of the
Knowledgebase came up with the following link :-

It does sound like a driver mismatch problem. Have you fished around for
drivers more specific to your controller?
