Is it sufficient to tell the user that an restart is required to
complete the upgrades? It seems that folks upgrading from a previous
release would hit this issue.

likely an issue with the new pango which transitioned to use harfbuzz
and had some structural change, we should try to have a look but there
is only so much we can do to deal with upgrades in a running session
without having to restart...

This same font issue is now affecting me since yesterday every time I
plug my n7 into the laptop. Same scenario: have applied updates without
restarting.
It seems to coincide with an update of both gtk2 and pango.

Yes, it was a freshly updated system that was not restared. This
morning, after turning on the computer again, the bug does not
reproduce.
