while waiting for the bug to be fixed : is there a way to manually work
around these erroneous dependency and install vmware-server without
uninstalling xinetd ? Is there a nore appropriate place to ask this
question ?

I fail to see how this is a problem in xinetd. The bug seems to be
rather in the vmware-server package instead. Closing the bugtask for
xinetd.

And I do know why. The DEB file has an error in dependency:
Depends: netbase, netkit-inetd | inetd, update-inetd, vmware-server-
kernel-modules...
it should probably read something like
Depends: netbase, netkit-inetd | inetd, update-inetd | xinetd, vmware-
server-kernel-modules...
