I can't reproduce it again with V 3.0.6 now.

pausing and resuming works fine.

I confirm this.
It also manifests itself for much smaller files. It can stop stop several times
for files no larger than 20MB. I cannot recall downloads 100MB or larger
running without stopping. It is totally unpredicta
Im not sure who added bug Bug #303294 as a duplicate of this one but
they are definitely not the same problem if you read carefully.
This bug describes pausing a DL as the *problem* where as in Bug #303294
I described pausing as the solution to the problem that downloads would
automatically pause

I'va got the same problem on FF3.0.5 (using up to date 8.10)
I attached a screenshot of the german error message shown up after resuming a
download.
There is a button to resume but if you click it it fails with resource not
found error.
