from what my further searching has uncovered fullscreen requires
hardware overlay which is only available with the Xv output mode. You
may have to change your xorg.conf file to get it to work (unpleasant).
Or maybe X just doesn't like your video card.

Same problem here. Fullscreen doesn't work in X11 output mode and video
"flickers in OpenGL output mode. It looks like if anything is moving

Me too, using Feisty (upgraded from Edgy). Summarizing:
1) gmplayer cannot scale to fullscreen.
2) mplayer can get fullscreen but with some flickering on the lower half of the
screen.
3) xine & totem crash issuing a:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)

Same here, used edgy.
i can go from command line with:
mplayer -vo xv -fs
as VLC and Totem doesnt work quite well with sub-titles, this command is
the best for watching .avi here
