You can find attached the VLC logs.
To produce these logs I have opened an avi video file (the sound worked
correctly after open) and than paused and hit play agin. All the warnings you
can see in the log are from the loss of audio afterwards.

This looks a lot like a problem between your display driver and
PulseAudio, such as the driver blocking preemption for too long.
Anyway, please provide the verbose VLC logs...
