hmm. I know I followed this up, I guess I forgot to submit the comment... The problem occurred because I did not remove amavisd.conf.disabled I had planned to deal with the config changes after upgrading to feisty. Once I removed the file in question dpkg was able to successfully configure amavis

I haven't tried amavisd-new on Feisty, but a number of packages are not coping well with /var/run now being a tempfs. Try creating the directory for the pid file manually and then run apt-get upgrade and see it the package configures. Please let us know if that corrects the problem. -- [apport]
