Same problem was with me.
I changed my systems hostname to FQD name. i.e. localhost.localdomain.com and
reinstlled amavisd-new. problem resolved.

hmm. I know I followed this up, I guess I forgot to submit the
comment...
The problem occurred because I did not remove amavisd.conf.disabled I
had planned to deal with the config changes after upgrading to feisty.
Once I removed the file in question dpkg was able to successfully
configure amavis
Confirming based on dupe.

I haven't tried amavisd-new on Feisty, but a number of packages are not
coping well with /var/run now being a tempfs. Try creating the
directory for the pid file manually and then run apt-get upgrade and see
it the package configures. Please let us know if that corrects the
problem.
