closing the bug, as it doesn't seem like we'll have sufficient
information, and anyway the problem wasn't vim's.

reinstall feisty, previously I had upgraded from edgy, but it was just
too unstable.

It's not vim that emits these errors, it must be some library it's
using. There may be something missing from your desktop environment.
