So, I've looking around the net for solutions. This eventually led me
to the discovery alsamixer (don't know why you'd use this instead of the
GUI version that you can access from the desktop). I also eventually
decided to unmute everything possible and put everything at full
gain/input. Meaning
So, basically, this means the mic is actually recording something, but
the information it's recording isn't making it to the applications
somehow...
