There seems to be two different bugs that produce the same symptoms.
The patched kernel above fixes the bug for SiS chipsets and should
somehow be moved into the main Ubuntu tree. There is a separate bug for

OK, second try at fixing this problem.
I have put a new test kernel in http://people.ubuntu.com/~pkl/ps2.
There is currently a kernel for i386, a x86_64 kernel will be available
as soon as it builds.
Please test and let me know if this second try fixes the ps/2

I have also had this problem, not with a SiS based, system, but with an Intel
440FX. ASUS KN97-X motherboard. The unsupported-patch-for-87262 mentioned above
has temporarily fixed the problem. lspci:

after shut down, which is very annoying.

I have reinstalled 7.04 using the alternate cd (I booted from the original
live cd but with no mouse it's hard to install).
