Does all the networking stop working? I don't understand why it would
just be Samba and nothing else. Also, when I said suspend I meant
suspending the VM, not suspending Win 98 itself.

In fact, if I start Ubuntu, suspend, and then start vmplayer for the
first time, I have the same problem. If I start Ubuntu, suspend, then
restart vmware-player, then run vmplayer. all is fine.

I run Windows 98 in the VM (don't ask...), and I can't suspend that. But
I don't think that's the issue. Even if I exit the VM, suspend Ubuntu,
and then restart the VM, the Samba networking fails. If I exit the VM,
suspend Ubuntu, restart vmware-player, and then restart the VM, all is
fine. Hence m
Have you tried suspending the VM before you suspend your laptop?
