launching with "dasher -a direct" will provide the desired behaviour.
The glade file for the preferences does have options for the different
application styles, but this bit is hidden and doesn't work. I believe
there is some upstream work on enhancing the UI for this.

The daemon "/usr/lib/at-spi/at-spi-registryd" needs to be running. It
should start when you turn on accessibility (and log out and back in),
or you can start it manually.

Dasher 4.2.2 under windows has this option in the "View" tab called
"Application Style" with two options: Stand-alone and Direct entry. I
can't see these in the linux version of Dasher in Ubuntu.
