Yes, it's still a problem (12.04LTS with updates as of Dec 19 '13).
I don't know of any way to reliably/consistently reproduce it. I
encounter it after 1-4 days of normal usage, which would be difficult to
duplicate with a development release. Perhaps one of the other affected

any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from

This is a serious regression. I never had any problem like this through
all the releases of Ubuntu I've used. This has been a non-stop annoyance
ever since upgrading to 12.04LTS.
Using the Nvidia driver.

Another clue may be that this is a laptop, and I only see the problem
when I'm docked with an external monitor setup (so I have two screens).
I never see this problem without the external/dual screen. I have a
desktop machine with only a single screen, but identical software setup,
which stays up

I see this same behavior without using nitrogen. I simply run a daemon
that regenerates the image nautilus is pointing to as the desktop
background periodically. After leaving it running overnight, I get the
same "Maximum number of clients reached" error. I can continue working
