I had problems with a Nikon Coolpix 4200 also. Tried the backported
libgphoto2-2.4.0 packages from bug #110065, but that was no better.
Eventually I worked out that by setting the camera to USB Mass Storage
mode, I am able to download photos in gthumb. Not quite as nice as PTP
mode, because it ne

Used to work on Dapper, after a recent upgrade now fails.
Also doesn't work at all on a brand new Feisty installation

No problem. Easy mistake to make. dmesg output is below. I'll attach
gphoto2 trace directly after plugging in the camera.

Oh, indeed there are no permission errors in the log, so this rather
seems to be an upstream bug in the camera drivers. Sorry, I did not see
that the bug subject was already camera specific. Unduplicating again.

This regression is not fixed by the suggestion above. I will attach the
(very similar) output of gphoto2 with this change. Other applications
fail with identical errors.
I am running latest Feisty so suggest that this issue is not a duplicate
of 91250.

I experienced the same problem with Canon PowerShot A700.
Solution: edit /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules so that the
beginning of the file is as it was in the older version, i.e. no "*":
