I'm getting the error too, it seems to keep other apps from running.
The kill statements seemed to run without error, but the error persists:
Preparing to replace mono-xsp2 1.2.1-1ubuntu1 (using
.../mono-xsp2_1.2.4-1.1ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
* Stopping XSP 2 WebServer mono-xsp2
As I reported in the duplicate(sorry for that) I got the same problem
while upgrading to Gutsy with mono-xsp. I solved that by killing the
'mono' process.
