And yes, manually unmounting works.
I was afraid that perhaps it would matter whether Nautilus was open to
that drive, but it doesn't. Manually unmounting always seems to

Correction: If you are quick you can unplug the disk during dismounted
phase. Then writing is still possible. (Doubtfully this is a reasonable
solution though).

Same here
Unfortunately after unmounting, a remount with writing enabled is not
possible any more. This renders any NTFS disk unwritable under Linux.
