Hello, I am from China. For some (maybe) well known reasons, I can not connect
to (and ping to) google. I can only connect to google by proxy.
I know that Wallch does not work behind proxy. How can I use Wallch in China?
I have tried the "crazy workaround" above, but it does not help. I can

Tried Alex's workaround(#3) on Ubuntu 17.04 and this gives me
segmentation fault(core dump). I followed the exact procedure multiple
times and each time the result is the same :(

wallch doesn't work behind an http proxy. It doesn't honor the
http_proxy, https_proxy shell environment variables.

Note
When at step 7
"Only one occurrence will be found, write out google.com (VERY carefully) and
replace it with the ip you can ping, like 127.0.0.01"
search and replace works fine using text to replace.

I knew that problems like this may arise. If you are interested I have a
quite crazy solution: Edit the wallch executable with a hex editor.
I tried it but it is a bit tricky so you have to be careful and follow
exactly the steps:
You said that your company has blocked your outbound pings, but no
Ooops... outbound pings is blocked in my company network o_O
but internet working, only pings is blocked :-D
