I seem to have fixed the problem by adding the following line to my file
.config/openbox/autostart
eval $(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)

thank you for your bug report, that's not an evince issue though but
rather a problem in your openbox session, you need a working dbus
session and not only for evince
