Ok, in Intrepid (8.10) there is the same problem, except for the output: now the splash terminate immediately, and many line with "splash_progress" appear. The system hangs after /etc/init.d/readahead start. Ctrl-alt-del provocate only a change in the output with negative values in splash_progress

Now I don't have the last release, but in the last LTS (8.04) there is the same problem. A splash screen appear after grub, but the loading bar is always to 99%. After a few seconds, splash disappear and I can see many "/etc/init.d/... start" lines (for example, "/etc/init.d/cupsys start"). X won't
