I have seen this a number of times:
If I boot the laptop on battery then attach a mains supply the popping
usually stops, but not always. If I remove and then re-add the mains
supply then it does stop.
It seems highly likely that the problem lay in power management
somewhere.

Although apparently less pronounced, this still occurs in Saucy.
I couldn't get Trusty to boot to check it.
Intel has absolutely nothing to do with this.
