I recently had to reinstall my PC and the problem was gone (I'm still
using precise).
I assume that a recent update in kernel or NetworkManager solved the
problem:

I have exactly the same problem in i386. The OS version is 12.04.1 32 bit, NIC
is Macronix 98715. With 12.10 LiveCD NetworkManager works as designed.
Please let me know if you need logs.

The problem does not occur on i386: I tried versions linux-generic-pae
3.2.0-23 and 3.2.0-26 and both work without problems. So it seems to be
an amd64 problem.

I installed linux-backports-modules-headers-precise-
generic_3.2.0.26.28_amd64.deb and linux-headers-lbm-3.2.0-26-generic but
both packages seem to be empty

I don't understand your question. I installed the packages from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5-rc7-quantal/,
rebooted and the problem still exists.
Is there something more I have to try ?
