This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

Hi, after two years without activity, I reopened the bug. I was programming a
script when I noted that don't had a bell.
I test with the follow combinations, and no positive results:
echo -e "\a"
echo -e '\a'
The man echo, doesn't give major info.

I also have this same issue, I tried ech -e '\a' to no avail, i was
pretty relient on terminal bell, and would really appreciate help in
getting this to work Ubuntu 9.10

now that you closed it I actually got around to testing

on Intrepid and guess what - it works. So I guess this bug should be
closed in any event.

Sorry for such a delayed response. I'm curious if you'd also be willing
to test with a Hardy Alpha release. It has an updated version of the
kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to the

Short answer: I just downloaded the gutsy live CD and there's still no
system beep.
I hadn't read your message yet and didn't think of saving the logs. I

I have this issue, too. (I don't see "Audio" in the Preferences Menu,
though. The closest I have is System > Preferences > Sound > System Beep
> Enable System Beep. I guess this is just a difference in translation.)
Since I get no beeps on the virtual console, either, I suspect that this
is a kern

speaker on your computer?
