I updated xserver-xorg-input-evdev and my problem got fixed. I can now
plug the headset and use it perfectly.

I beleive I have this exact same problem. I get this using Linux Mint 13
Cinnamon and MATE. Headset is a Plantronics Blackwire C610.
As soon as I plug the USB headset X crashes.

Okay, I realized my mistake, I installed the Quantal kernel, tried the
Precise kernel for the exact same version and everything booted and ran
properly except the USB Headset. Problem still exists.

Not sure how to mark this, I installed 3.40-030400-generic and booted
from it. None of my USB devices worked at all, yet they all listed
properly in lsusb. My wireless card also did not work at all, i.e. no
wireless extensions listed in iwconfig. On the plus side plugging in
the USB headset does
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.4kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only
