System -> Administration -> Users and Groups
Add
it asks for the new user name and password
then returns to main User and Group menu.
it has already made the user using the lowest available
UID
then trying to set it to something else it fails
with no message.

hi,
autofs4 is the default and i had many problems with it,
i found the autofs5 deb file and
have had much better luck with that.
google for autofs5 should lead you to it.

i had similar problems,
it might be unrelated but for me
putting the HorizSync and VertRefresh
in the xorg.conf file seemed to force
more resolution choices to be accepted.
ie:
Section "Monitor"
HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 150.0
