No, the problem went away, although I am convinced now it is/was related to
the nvidia driver I was using, I mean, there were an assortment of other
issues; for example, pink lines across mplayer windows, see

I have the exact same problem. It only happens when I maximize the window.
Using Gutsy with an Nvidia Geforce 6600.

When I disabled compiz the problem went away.
You were right; I still think it's related to an nvidia driver update though.

After upgrading to Gutsy Beta, during video playback---if I receive an
e-mail notification, popup window is incredibly slow and hard to read;
video playback grinds to a skipping slow-motion. Audio is fine;

I should mention this may be an mplayer issue; although the problem
seems to occur in VLC as well.
I have the slight feeling that it's none of these; that it may just be a
restricted-modules/nvidia issue. Darn!
