I ran into this issue when trying to upgrade from 20.04 to 20.10. Looks
like there are a lot of dbus issues when trying upgrade. There are other
issues similar to this one and almost all of them are observed during
the release upgrade.

Docker screwed up 18.04 upgrade and I had to manually re-install the
Ubuntu-desktop package to get the system working. docker always screws
up Ubuntu upgrades.

Installation of Nvidia proprietary driver from HW drivers
(System->administration) windows caused a crash in Jockey-gtk package.
The crash was detected but the automated reporting failed. It had asked
me to upgrade to python 2.6 and python2.6-minimal. But I already have
2.6.4
Steve: I tried you conf file, it made no difference. The system freezes
once I hit enter.
Workaround that worked for me:
at grub select recovery mode. select drop to root option and just enter
"start gdm". once gdm comes up I am able to use enter key without any
