I have the same symptoms but I am not using gnome-shell.
I use i3-wm with the synaptics drivers, so I believe the problem might be
comming from somewhere else than gnome-shell. Maybe from the drivers.

This did not fix the issue. But it certainly changed things !
I no longer have the red bar saying "Failed to execute child process
"exo-open" (Permission denied)", instead I have an alert saying :

Public bug reported:
Using a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04 beta, I can not open links from
within evince.
A red bar appears on top and says :
"Unable to open external link"
"Failed to execute child process "exo-open" (Permission denied)"
I suppose this is due to a bad configuration of AppArmor.

That is the error I also had when upgrading to a newer kernel (2.6.22-13)? If
you downgrade to 2.6.22-12 all should be well.
Is this package going to be kept up to date? Wil there be an official
fix for this package (in universe) when gutsy is released?

I filed bug #87386 (now a duplicate). My workaround used to be to
blacklist the ehci_hcd module. That way my USB-stick and cardreader
worked (at a slower speed, but they got recognised).
Now even blacklisting doesn't work anymore; I have to manually modprobe
-r ehci_hcd after every reboot.
