On 16.04.3 I used Synaptic to narrow down the packages that seem to cause the
crash.
I installed packages, made not of them and rebooted to see if I could reproduce
the problem.
The last four packages that were left over before the issue could be reproduced
were:
libegl1-mesa 17.2.4-0ubuntu1~16

I have almost the same behavior with 16.04.3. It doesn't log me out but
restarts Unity.
Freshly installed 16.04.3 runs normally. After installing updates Unity crashes
exactly like in the OP. Same compiz segfault at 0 ip (...) error 4 in
i965_dri.so (...) with slightly different addresses.

FWIW, Kernel 3.14.54 was good and 3.15.0-031500rc1 was bad.
Commit bisection is a little intimidating, since I have never done it before
but I heve given it a try anyway.
I did the following
$ git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-trusty.git
$ cd ubuntu-trusty/
$ git checkout -b mybise
Using the latest kernel 4.3rc4:
$ uname -a
Linux janeway 4.3.0-040300rc4-generic #201510041330 SMP Sun Oct 4 17:32:10 UTC
2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The suspend / resume behaviour does not seem to have changed.
Closing, waiting for the soft confirmation beep, waiting another 5-10 seconds

Public bug reported:
On my Thinkpad SL510 I get a loud beep when opening the lid to resume from
suspend.
Resuming seems to work as expected, no obvious other symptoms occur.
The beep when closing the lid sounds normal: Quiet and about 130ms in duration.
The duration of the loud beep is about 50ms
On my SL510 I have the same loud beep when resuming from suspend. I first
experienced it with 14.04 LTS and Kernel 3.16. Today a fresh install of 15.10
Beta 2 on the same hardware showed the same symptom. Resuming from suspend
works in both cases.
The loud beep was not present in 14.04 with Kern
