I was getting this on my amd64 server until recently - however I always
use 'apt-get update; apt-get -y dist-upgrade'.
I have been putting off doing any upgrades to avoid any more lock-ups,
but have just successfully performed one, so it might have cleared?

session on a CentOS 5.3 server via XDMCP. The text looks identical:
