I too have similar problem on MacBookPro9,1 w/ clean installed 14.04.
After my pc gets suspended, the only way to fix this issue is to reboot.

I was using ubuntu 8.04 desktop with HP Proliant Ml115 which uses Matrox G200
for vga, and 1280x1024 LCD monitor.
Everything worked perfectly on 8.04 but after upgrading to 8.10 with
"update-manager -d" and reboot, display resolution droped to 1024x768. Then I
