- In almost 7 years of using Ubuntu (all with Nvidia binary drivers)
full graphics freezes have been very rare and hardly associable with

I found some weird "coincidence" - I have this same log spamming every
few seconds, but only when I run Opera browser. It does not even relate
to browsing itself, because it starts even after opening empty Ope
There is a problem that administration panel settings in "Time and Date"
is not respected, because there are affecting ntp configuration, but
ntpdate configuration can not be set in any way. It is the bug in user
interface and not in ntp or ntpdate.

No obvious way to prevent ntpdate to be run
Do you upgraded to lucid or did a clean install?

Now on Lucid with 2.6.32-22 amd64 the /etc/init.d/halt script is exactly
the same as before, but problem is solved - NIC is powered down as it
should.

These are drivers, not firmware.
Now I found out something else - /etc/init.d/halt script has the part,
that should make possible to not shut down the network interfaces to
enable using the WOL.
When I commented out that part -

Unfortunately firmware update did not solve the problem completely -
longer uptime causes this behaviour to be back again.
