Oh, I forgot: I even haven't installed the unicode version of these fonts, so
on my system I got the same output with the fonts of comment 2.
But I can render it on my windows system, where I have the MS fonts installed!

That PDF uses the hebrew chars of the arial font, but the font is not
embedded:

I don't know why it stopped working, but I found a solution for it: If
the XRef catalog is not a dictionary, I try to reconstruct XRef and find
another root reference first before returning. This works for this PDF,
but I have to regtest the patch first. I'll probably do that next
weekend and I'll
I cannot find the PDF from Sebastien anymore, but the PDF from comment 2
renders with the actual version in 25 sec, so less than 1 second / page, and
also CASE.pdf renders in less than 1 second / page.
So this problem seems to be fixed now.
