I have a fresh installation of Hardy with the latest updates installed
on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The brightness settings (Fn+Up/Down)
work although they seem to skip a level each time.

I've got the same problem, a screenshot is at:

Nautilus is in the background and Firefox is in the foreground. I
thought deleting ~/.fonts.conf would fix the problem but that file
wasn't there.
Has anyone got any suggestions of what I could try next?
