backend to work and the kubuntu packagers refuse to package it because

I can confirm that what Yannig has said is correct. It seems that the
Ubuntu packages for strigi have not been compiled with 'sesame2'
support. This is a far quicker indexer for KDE4 than 'redland'.

That isn't a solution. Try and be practical. Many people use the .local
suffix on their domain names. They're not going to change it just so
that they can add an Ubuntu machine to their domain - or because you
said so.

I have observed that adding the SMB printer works if you untick the

I think I've got it.
/etc/nsswitch.conf has the following line in it:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
I swapped it for this line, getting rid of the 'mdns4' records:
hosts: files dns [NOTFOUND=return]
After this and a 'sudo /etc/inet.d/networking restar
