The patched software-center update came in this morning. I applied and
it works, though with a few failed assertions. I started software-center
from command line and just looked through the available apps and clicked
on a few more infos. I got the following failed assertions from just
browsing apps

I have had problems with Evolution since I started with Ubuntu 6.10. And
now, I just did a completely fresh load of Jaunty and I get this bug
about one in every 8-9 message ops in Evolution.
Now, I'm not saying that Ubuntu developers MUST fix this bug, but I
think it is an extremely poor decision

Confirmed that the removal of the video card got past the reported
problem. Switched back to on-board video and was able to get further
toward live session.

Ok, I finally got back to this machine with time for some debugging. I
downloaded 8.10 Beta (both DVD and CD versions).
The new kernel with Ubuntu 8.10 does not fix the problem. I still cannot
boot the live CD.
Some updated information regarding the machine itself.
1) Uses Intel 82845 chipset.

I have no PCI express on the board. I will recheck all BIOS settings
when I get back to the machine in a few days but when I checked before,
I saw nothing that gave me hope as to a BIOS setting problem.

I just encountered this same kind of lockup today. I have tried 2
different phones in combination with 2 different bluetooth adapters. The
lockup only occurs on one of the phones, the HTC Tilt - AT&T 8925 (Win
Mobile). The Sony Ericsson (Symbian) phone does not have this problem.
