I have two different makes and models of computers running Ubuntu Server
12.04.1 LTS and they are experiencing the same freezing that others are
experiencing.
One is a Dell Dimension 4600 and the other is a HP Pavilion 8679F. I
know these are old, but previously they both were running 10.04

I "upgraded" or re-installed the alsa drivers listed above and now I
have sound again. I will have to check all the users to see if they all
have sound again, or not.

Upgraded to the latest kernel update, and now I no longer have sound
again. Back to where we were before. Do I have to re-install the alsa
driver from above to work with the new kernel?

I changed the setting for all users, but not all users have sound.

I installed the alsa driver as indicated per the instructions on the
site. Rebooted, and still no sound. I then tried your suggestions to
change the output connector, and I now have sound using the Analog
Output / No Amplifier option. I now have sound (at least in a random
YouTube video).

Tried granting all users 'Use audio devices' privileges. Still no sound.
Added 'blacklist atiixp_modem' to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-oss.conf. Still no
sound.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop LTS i386 on a eMachines M622-UXK8. I
just installed this release on this laptop this week. I have had
Mandriva Linux on this machine before with the same results. I know the
issue is not Ubuntu specific, but I am unable to get sound to work
