This bug must be the worst I've come across in my 6-7 years with ubuntu.
Some services not starting is an absolute show stopper security issue that

I have a similar problem on my desktop.
When I click on the shutdown button X freezes for
about 60 seconds, before the window pops up
showing the log out, restart, shutdown options.
It only happens the first time
I do it. If I cancel the window when it pops up the second
time works fine.

ps -ef | grep evolution | grep -v grep
returns nothing.
So don't think it is related.
When the problem occurs (after a logout to GDM and back in)
I need to kill amarok and then do /usr/bin/kdeinit. This seems to allow
amarok to start up again.

A solution that doesn't involve copying bash31 from an edgy system is as
follows:
sudo vi /lib/firehol/firehol (replace vi with you editor of choice)
and replace all %q strings with %b.
This is what they've done in gentoo to solve the problem.

I use several KDE apps in my Gnome Panel:
- amarok
- korn
- kopete
Sometimes they don't dock in the panel when I log in.
They instead appear on the desktop but not in the panel.
This always happens if I logout to GDM and re-login.
