I know this was fixed upstream, and it seems to be backported to the
intrepid kernel. the problem was with the r8169 driver not correctly
working with a r8168 as it was meant to. r8169 in kernel works with
r8168

can you use the keyboard in bios? the boot loaders uses the same
"drivers" from bios.
To get usb keyboard suport in bios you need to turn on "usb legacy
emulation" in your bios, if you cannot get to bios because of your
keyboard you need to use a ps/2 keyboard to do it.

yeah i thought intrepid kept packages up to date but it does use 1.x,
but alsa when packages use CC it lists them and its not listed, because
CC licences are generally quite different from proprietary licenses
(although ND could be used for commercial freeware)

this was a one part of me half moving back to windows for my primary
desktop. In windows the issues are so bad and widespread that its easy
to google how to turn them off while in ubuntu they are only now
creeping in, and therefore people have not gotten around them yet. its
like how Firefox broke

reinstalling hibernate suport to try to fix it I ended up in an endless
loo of dependancies and can not boot gnome. I am looking at this in lynx
