in the opening dialog:
File name:fish://root@localhost/etc/hosts
results in:
hosts
File not found.
Please verify the correct file name was given.
however on the command line:
robert@lappi:~$ kate fish://root@localhost/etc/hosts
works fine.
on a side note:
on ubuntu 14.x kat

seems it is not
