I have recently upgrade to intrepid but I remeber I had problems with
mounting smb shares with Gnome. I didn't try supplying ip address, I
just used smbclient which worked fine.

I agree but my experience is that "low" priority bugs usually never get
fixed... I think this is a kind of bug which doesn't break functionality
but gives a very unpleasant experience to the user. Maybe at least
