Sorry, I have found the problem. Thunderbird was not idle, it was downloading a
large imap account since 15 days :)

The problem occurs under an up-to-date ubuntu 18.10.
On this system, thunderbird use more 50% of one core permanently.
I have deactivated all supplementary modules and get the same results.
package version : 1:60.2.1+build1-0ubuntu1
My expectation is to have an idle thunder

The problem was different for me. After removing gnome3, vnc was not in the
plugins list any more.
I had to manually add it in gconf-editor :
apps/vinagre/plugins -> active-plugins

I can confirm this. I use gnubiff 2.2.10 from repos under ubuntu 8.10.
This is boring cause this make gnubiff unusuable on a laptop that
hibernate/resume frequently...
