I have this problem after upgrading from 12.04LTS to 14.04LTS. Will a
solution be forthcoming via an upgrade in the near future, or will I
have to take some manual steps?

I also have this problem. I could get around it by running a previous
kernel from the grub list, but since updating today to the latest kernel
I can't do this any more because it refuses to boot up the previous
kernel (now 6 down the list).
It's very depressing that this is taking so long to fix.
