I added a USB sound device and disabled the onboard device because I was
getting noise.
Once I did this, Ubuntu hangs during as X11 is trying to load and aplay doesn't
detect a sound device.

Short answer: I believe I followed these instructions:

previously to specify the model type ("options snd-hda-intel model=basic" et
al.) and t

Everything works properly for me on my S10e now thanks to Björn Leder.

Well, while it's not the most elegant solution (I keep hoping that some day

Amongst elsewhere that I've found on the net. This seems to be a pretty common
problem. I hope someone has a solution to this.
I'd offer to code if I could but I'm just a glorified keyboard jockey myself.
