Sometimes, exiting out of a right-click/menu-bar menu doesn't actually
close the menu. Sometimes, the actual menu options remain, while other
times they are replaced by an empty black box. Launching any new menus
over the previous one causes them to "stamp" themselves onto the
James_w's PPA fixes it for me. Thank you very much!
